Let me ask you a simple question…

What immediately springs to mind when I mention the following well-known brands?

  • Coca Cola
  • Starbucks
  • MacDonald’s

If you are anything like me then usually the first thing that springs to mind is the logo. Each of them has iconic logos which we all immediately recall and recognisable.

Each business has invested heavily to promote and develop its brand identity to become almost a subconscious as well as conscious association with a business.

The Basics of Effective Branding

What is branding? Branding is much more than a logo. Branding is your promise to your customer. It tells them what to expect as well as differentiates you from your competitors. Simply put, your brand is derived from who you are, who you want to be and who people perceive you to be.

Think about your product or service for example

Are you a high cost, high quality option?

Or

Low cost, high volume option?

You can’t be both and you can’t be all things to all men (and women). Who you should aspire to be is based to a large extent on what your target audience want and need you to be.

The foundation of any great brand is the logo and for your brand to be successful any materials (website, packaging and promotional) should integrate with your logo to communicate your brand.

Defining Your Brand

This is not as simple as having a nice logo. It goes MUCH deeper than this if you want to build a world class brand for your business. You should ask these important questions:-

  • What is the company’s mission?
  • What are the benefits and features of your product or service?
  • What do your existing customers already think about you?
  • What qualities do you want them to associate with your company?

It’s key to spend some time doing your research. Learn the needs, habits and desires of your current and prospective customers. Don’t try and second guess this yourself. Chances are you’ll be wrong! You need to know what they think. A great way of doing this is by simple surveys. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll learn and how much more in tune you’ll be with your target audience.

Get a Great Logo – and put it everywhere!

Write down your brand message – what key messages do you want to get across.

Make Sure Your Staff are On-board Too – do they understand what your brand stands for?

Integration & Adoption – Your brand should be consistent across all marketing channels.

Create A “VOICE” – is your brand quirky, serious, funny?

Develop A Tagline –What short and memorable phrase embraces your brand philiosophy?

Create Brand “STANDARDS” – the logo should be exactly the same EVERYWHERE!

Deliver – for any brand to be successful you must deliver on your brand promise.

Be Consistent – Do ALL the above to create a successful brand!
