Before we go inside todays RANT I wanted to tell you a quick story which I hope sums things up in simplistic terms including

  • How to Increase Your Sales By Up To 400%Without Any More Traffic
  • How To Build More Customer Life-Time Value – To Not ONLY Make More Money BUT Also They Absolutely Love You for It
  • How To Build An Army Of Brand-Ambassadors Who Will Be “Out-There” Singing Your Praises At Every Opportunity
  • How NOT To Come Over Sleazy or Salesy in Your Messaging

About 3 months ago I stumbled on a strange phenomenon that is increasingly becoming more common! (I’m sure I’m not the first to experience it either!!)

I like to call it….

The Business Owner Straight-Jacket Syndrome..”

And Here’s Why…

I like to regularly buy small gifts for some of my regular clients as an appreciation for their much valued custom.

(TIP: Just Do this – I’ll share some of the actual results of this in another RANT to follow)

Typical gifts included wine, chocolates, gift vouchers etc. – I’m sure you’ve seen the type of thing!!

Nothing to fancy or awe inspiring either ;(

So This Year I Wanted To do Something Completely Different…

I spent a rainy Monday morning at my local café (they make knock-out breakfasts!) trawling the internet for some divine inspiration.

2 hours 37 minutes later….

(plus numerous cappuccinos, a fantastic scambled eggs with smoked salmon and a delicious slice of lemon drizzle cake!)

Thinking makes me hungry BTW!!

I managed to short list 6 equally different (and what I thought interesting) products I thought fitted the bill, including hand-made chocolates, personalised Leather notebooks, some wacky hand-crafted pens and some delicious looking chocolate brownies!!

(Note to self : Stop thinking about food all the time!)

Now Here’s The Funny Thing…

  1. I emailed each company stating that I was looking to purchase regularly 15-20 items EVERY single month.
  2. I indicated that I anticipated this figure to conservatively double in the next 12 months
  3. I asked for their best price
  4. I asked if they could ship-worldwide (I would pay P&P)
  5. I asked if they would enclose a notelet or thank-you card into each package (I would supply these)
  6. I indicated I was prepared to pay extra to have points 4 and 5 done

The Results Are In…

After waiting 7 days here’s what I discovered…

  • Only 3 out of the 6 actually bothered to reply
  • 1 company replied via email within 2 hours
  • Out of the other two companies 1 company replied within 48 hours and the other was about 4 days after my initial inquiry
  • Only 1 of the companies that did eventually reply (this was the one that also replied within 2 hours too) indicated they would be more than happy to do the additional tasks I had requested.

Lessons Learned…

  1. 50% of the businesses I contacted had no effective follow up – think about that!! Too many business owners “think” they have a problem generating enough leads. Yes – this could be the case for sure, but I find most businesses have a “conversion” issue rather than an issue with leads.
  2. Only one business followed up promptly the same day. I’m sure if you are anything like me if I don’t get a response promptly (24 hours or less) it doesn’t bode well with me!
  3. Only one business out of the 6 would actually comply with my request. These businesses were all gift companies yet they wouldn’t go the extra mile to gift wrap and enclose a “Thank-You” (not even if I offered to pay a surcharge for the service!!)
  4. 5 businesses out the 6 “lost” my business (I spend around $1000 (£750) per month on gifts!)
  5. I have already recommended the “winner” to at least 10 of my clients too and I guess half will use the service. I estimate this figure to be 10x this by the end of the year.
  6. The “losers” have lost around $12,000 per year business from me alone. I would conservatively estimate the clients will buy 10x this amount which is equivalent to $120,000+ per year in business.
  7. The Winning business owner didn’t have to spend a single penny extra for any of this additional business (apart from the odd box of brownies she sends me when I send another happy customer her way!)

Do You Suffer From The Business Owner Straight-Jacket Syndrome Too?

  1. Do you follow up promptly and professionally to every single lead – you never know where it may lead (excuse the pun!)?
  2. Are you willing to be flexible working with your clients? – if you won’t someone else will!!
  3. Do you provide a stellar pre-sales and post sales experience ? – you clients will become your raving fans and brand ambassadors?
