Facebook Mistake #1 – Assuming people go to your fan page v seeing your posts in their newsfeed

Once people have visited your Fanpage it is very rare they revisit it again unless you drive traffic directly back to the page. Most people will see your posts in the Newsfeed. It’s important to note that only about 25-50% of people will ever see your posts in their newsfeed unless you use paid Facebook ads

Facebook Mistake # 2 – Welcome Tabs = More Fans

Whilst this strategy worked really well 12-18 months ago it doesn’t work so well anymore. Remember only non-fans will see the fan gate. Facebook Research has shown that 0.1-0.5% of fans actually go to your fan page

Facebook Mistake # 3 – App Overload

Lots of people think that by creating an app will create a viral tsunami of traffic. Think again. Unless people already know, like and trust you and your brand it is highly unlikely they will use your App. Again research has shown up to 75% of people will not use it anyway. You need to test this as it differs from market to market.

Facebook Mistake # 4 – No Ad Budget

The cheapest and quickest, especially when your page is new, is to pay for some ads initially. Dependant on the market these can cost you anything from 1p upwards. Personally I have grown huge Facebook pages in a couple of months to 40,000+ for around 1p/ Fan.

Facebook Mistake #5 – It’s Not Just About You

Many businesses get this soooooo wrong. They focus solely about how good their widgets are rather than trying to engage their fans in their posts. Ask questions, be funny but get them to interact. By their interaction your posts will get shown more due to the increased Edgerank of your posts

Facebook Mistake #6 – Not Tracking the Metrics

What you don’t measure you can’t improve. What numbers are important to your business? Is it Fanpage size, email list size, number of responses? You need to decide what’s important. You should aim to at least get a 1% feedback rate (i.e. if you have a Fanpage of 10k then your posts should on average be getting 100+ likes/comments/shares). If you are paying for traffic this becomes even more important. Things like click through rate (CTR), Cost per Click (CPC) and conversion MUST be measured if you have any chance of becoming successful.

Facebook Mistake #7 – The Hard Sell

Don’t try and sell all the time. Your page should contain no more than 20% commercial posts maximum. Remember Facebook is a social network so don’t abuse it!! It’s like going on a date…take it slowly at first J. You can do some clever things such as “Dark Posts” that won’t show up in your timeline.

Facebook Mistake #8 – Not building An Email List

This is probably the biggest mistake I see. You have to build your own list. Once you have your own email list you will be in control of your marketing much more than relying solely on Facebook. You’ll need to create some clever “bribes” so they’ll opt in to your list. Think about what your ideal prospect would live to know. Why not use a survey?? It’s great for some free market research.
