Getting Started With Adwords Remarketing

When you first setup a remarketing campaign in Google AdWords, the range of options can be rather overwhelming. If you just need to get a basic Adwords remarketing campaign in place quickly, this article will walk you step-by-step through the process.

STEP # 1 – Install The Adwords Remarketing Conversion Tracking Pixel

Follow the steps in the AdWords Help Center to get remarketing installed on your website. The Help Center article you need is: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2476688

The key thing here is to adjust your website’s privacy policy, to let people know you’re using remarketing. You can see mine here (https://damianqualter.com/privacy-policy/).

I believe my remarketing privacy wording is perfectly sufficient for most businesses. As a disclaimer, please remember I’m a marketer, not a lawyer. You may still wish to seek your own legal advice.

STEP #2 – Create Your Remarketing Lists

Once the tracking code is installed the next stage is to create your remarketing lists in the shared library. Each remarketing list is a group of people you want to run ads to. For example, you might want to run ads to everybody who visited your website in the last 14 days, but didn’t opt in.

Remarketing lists can be found in the shared library:

Click the red ‘remarketing list’ button, and create a new list of website visitors.

Give your new list a name, and change the list type to ‘visitors of a page who did not visit another page’.

In the example above, I’ve included all website visitors (anyone who visits a page URL that includes ‘/’) who didn’t view my opt in thank you page (/thanks).

Name your remarketing list carefully. I’ve named mine:

Viewed site didn’t opt-in | 14 days

This tells me exactly who is in the audience, and what the duration of the audience is. In the description, make some brief notes on what offer you intend to show to this audience.

STEP #4 – Create Your Adwords Remarketing Campaign

Back in the campaigns screen, create a new display network only campaign.

You can choose to limit your ads to a particular country, if you only sell in specific territories or regions. Under the ad delivery options, put a frequency cap so people only see ads in a single ad group two or three times per day. This stops people from thinking you’re ‘stalking’ them.

If this is one of your first remarketing campaigns, change the ad rotation settings to ‘rotate evenly’ or ‘rotate indefinitely’. At this stage, you want to figure out which ads get the highest click through rate. Optimising for conversions comes later.

AdWords will now offer to create your first ad group. Give your ad group the same name as the audience you created (in our example this was ‘Viewed site didn’t opt-in | 14 days’).

Set the enhanced CPC bid at 50%-75% of what you would normally pay for a click in a regular search campaign.

Select ‘interests and retargeting’, and select the list you’ve just created.

Uncheck the option at the bottom to ‘let AdWords automatically find new customers’. This is something to experiment with once your campaign is working, not something to use in the beginning.

STEP #5 – Now Time To Add Your ads

You can choose between adding image ads, and responsive text ads.

Don’t dismiss using text ads – they can work just as well as image ads. In general though, I create separate ad groups for image and text (responsive) ads, to allow me to compare performance.

As a starting point, I’d suggest starting with image ads. The best size to start with is 300*250 pixels.  This ad size gets more impressions than any other size, so start with this while you are testing different sizes. Once you have an image ad that is working, recreate it in the other ad sizes.
