One of the great things about the Infusionsoft campaign builder is that it allows you to have a targeted communication with a client. It gives you a closer look into their habits on the platform, about their actions, and personal information provided by them. When this kind of information is combined with demographic and psychographic one, you have a powerful tool, which can make a huge difference for your business. It gives you the ability to easily target communication with a client, and be more successful in it.
The thing that allows that kind of scenario is the Infusionsoft decision diamond.
A Decision Diamond or node is an integral part of the segmentation, of the campaign building process, and it’s basically looking for an answer when it ends up on the crossroad. When you give it two paths to follow, it needs instructions when and where.

Although it might look easy, you should know it’s not. When making rules, you are supposed to use logical statements, which you are going to repeat thousands of times. This is where the major problem might occur, that you end up lost in all those if, or, and… Here is an example.
Rules for Sequence One
If Contact’s Tags don’t contain TAG B or TAG D or TAG G
Rules for Sequence Two
If Contact’s Tags contain TAG B or TAG D or TAG G
The first thing you are going to think when you see this is that if the first string doesn’t contain any of the Tags written, it will go into sequence one, and if it does it will go into the second sequence. But, that is not how things work.
These are actually three separate rules in each string, or six when counting both strings. First one actually means that if Contacts doesn’t contain TAG B OR if Contacts doesn’t contain TAG D OR if Contacts doesn’t contain TAG G. Or in other words, if contact is missing one of those three tags, it would go into a first sequence.
If you want the things to work the way you thought they are going to at the beginning, you must use AND, instead of OR. In that case, strings would look like this.

If Contact’s Tags contains TAG B or TAG D or TAG G
Logical statements are a bit difficult for the people who never faced them. You need some time to get used to it. It’s not nuclear physics, it just needs time. Of course, there are some tricks that can help you work through this. One of the best tricks is to break apart complicated decision diamond into many simple ones.
Depending on your relationship with a certain client, you want your communication to be different. The way you communicate won’t be the same with someone you know for years, as with someone you just met. Sometimes you want just subtle differences in messages. The best way to achieve that, and not end up in a blind road, is to use cascading logic.
Make things simple, let every decision diamond have only one rule. Send the clients with partner tags here (Blue), but those without it to the top (Red). Send down those who are tagged as Infusionsoft employees (Green), if not leave them on top (Red). If they are not tagged as Infusionsoft users, put them at the bottom (Purple), and if they are, put them to the highest sequence on top (Double Red).
This way you can address your partners the way you like, Infusionsoft employees the other way, and those who don’t use Infusionsoft completely differently. Setting things this way prevents people from ending up in multiple sequences, because all the decision diamonds have IF A/IF NOT A combination, which prevents mistakes, and helps messages end up in the right place. There is no overlapping of groups, and the thing is much more organized and easier to use.

You can often hear people complaining and asking why they cannot set up some rules, and just send the last sequence, that doesn’t go under any criteria, to an already specified place.
