How To Know Who Your Perfect Customer Is?

This is something I see many marketers doing all the time.

They create a product (no market research done prior to creating the product) in the hope that it will sell well when they launch it to their customers.

Perfect CustomerThe vital step they miss before they create the product is defining who is their “perfect” customer?

It’s a really easy mistake to make  in the rush to get something to market quickly BUT if you ignore this important process I can virtually guarantee you won’t get the results you deserve as you have failed to determine and understand you customer fully first.

A great way of doing this is creating as survey and actually asking them directly rather than second guessing the answer.

Here are a few tips you can ask yourself to help dig deep into your customers psyche:-

  1. What pain or sense of urgency is my prospect experiencing? Say you were selling a weight loss product and it was aimed at brides to be who were going to get married in the next 3 months. What do you think the emotions and feelings they would be experiencing if they needed to lose weight for their big day? Is it that they want to look great in their dress? They want to feel beautiful as they walk down the aisle? Do they want to feel sexy?
  2. Are my prospects actively looking for a solution to their problem? There’s no point trying to fix what isn’t broken. If I was selling SEO services to local businesses are they actively looking to generate more leads for their business? If I was a dentist and wanted to find a solution to reducing the numbers of “no-shows” do you think they’d be interested in a cost-effective SMS reminder system?
  3. Does my Prospect have few or no perceived options? Of course the fewer the options of a solution the better, but this can also work against you too. Sometimes it can be better that your prospect is aware of some of the potential solutions available. It’s your job as a marketer to get the message to the prospect that your solution is the BEST!
  4. Is there a sizeable market for your solution? There’s no point developing a product that has few prospective customers generally. (There are one or two exceptions to this rule notably when you may be selling high priced things such as consultancy or offering a really high ticket item in a niche market that you understand already.)

Ideal ProspectAlthough this is just a small sample of things you can do as a marketer to develop and market products that have a real demand. Not only will your overall marketing be much better but chances of wasting time developing  a “dud” product can be virtually eliminated.

If you don’t have your own list yet why not spend a bit of time hanging out in forums related to your topic to see what people are talking about. It’s a great way to get some free and invaluable market research.
