Google Adwords : How To Test Ads Against Multiple Ad Groups

Google AdWords is the world’s most sophisticated ad testing machine. You get to create multiple ads, and see what ad copy delivers the most profit.

The problems start when you have a granular AdWords account structure.

As you accumulate data in your AdWords account, best practice is to ‘peel and stick’ high performing keywords into their own ad groups, with their own dedicated ads. As you account structure becomes more granular, testing ads becomes more difficult.

How Can We Test Multiple Ad Groups In Google Adwords

It’s easy to test ads when you have three or four ad groups in a campaign. But what if you have twenty ad groups sharing the same number of clicks?

The answer is to test your ads across multiple ad groups, using labels.

If you have 20 ad groups, the idea is to create the same ads in each ad group. In an ad group targeting the keyword ‘PPC Conversion Tracking’, you might create the following three ads:

Notice that each ad has a label applied: ‘ad1’, ‘ad2’ and ‘ad3’.

In another ad group you then recreate the ads, adjusting the ad headline to accommodate the different keyword.

Notice that the three labels for each ad are the same, the only thing that differs across the ad groups is the ad headline. In this ad group, we’re targeting the keyword ‘Facebook Conversion Tracking’.

When it’s time to review ad performance, you can use your labels to ‘add up’ the performance of each ad across all your ad groups.

First, set you date range. I normally set the date range to be the period since you last changed your ads.

Next up is to create a new table report:

Once you’ve done this then from the options on the left, drag ‘ad label’ so it appears under ‘Add rows’.

Then drag impressions, clicks, cost, conversions, click through rate (CTR), conversion rate and cost per conversion (Cost / conversion) into ‘add values’.

And voila! You can now compare the performance of ads 1, 2 and 3 across multiple ad groups!

In my screenshot the numbers are all zero’s because I’m using a demonstration account to illustrate the process.

As your account structure becomes more granular, testing ads in this way allows you to test ads faster than testing ads in individual ad groups.
