The Pledge

The Pledge – Michael Masterson

The PledgeHere’s a book I have been dying to read for ages. Now I have a bit of spare time on my hands over the Xmas holidays I decided to give it a read.

Masterson helps the reader put together a master plan to help you achieve your goals. Based on the “best of the best” principles of productivity by the all-time greats such as Stephen Covey & Dale Carnegie.

The great “take-away” I got from reading the book was how to translate ideas into a specific and actionable set of objectives. Most self-improvement books fall way short here.

The big “ah-ha” moment to me was when he breaks down goals and objectives from a strategic plan at its highest level, into a set of actionable daily tasks at its lowest level.

Here’s how the book does just that:-

  • Seven Year Goal – highest level strategic plan
  • 1st Year Goal
  • Monthly Objective
  • Weekly Objective
  • Daily Tasks – lowest level tasks

As you can see from the above each of the following set of objectives or goals feeds of the preceding level.

It’s almost like reverse engineering what you need to do to achieve a specific long term goal.

The beauty of this approach is that as you get into it you can see on a daily level that what you are doing on a daily basis feeds into the higher level goals and objectives which in turn brings you step by step closer to your long term goals.

I have been using these methods for a couple of weeks now and I must admit my productivity (and motivation) has increased dramatically since applying these techniques. I can already see remarkable results even though I have not been using it long and definitely feel that I will continue to use this in the future.

The book is much more to this but this was the bit I loved most. I guess it was one of the missing pieces of the puzzle I needed. It brings together lots of other teachings and helps simplify the whole process of self-improvement through having an easy to follow plan on all levels.

It’s incredibly easy to follow too. Nothing difficult at all. All you need to do is decide on what is important to you (and why) and then formulate that from a big long term vision right down into micro steps.

Masterson certainly knows a thing or two about success. He developed Early To Rise, a newsletter published by Agora Inc. and has been involved in several business success stories including ones which have grown to the $100m+ mark in a considerably short period of time.

I read the book initially in a couple of sittings and have subsequently re-read it taking time to now apply what it teaches into my own daily routine.

Mastersons writing style is to the point and he holds no punches telling the reader “as it is”.

This is probably one of the best, self-improvement books I have read in ages. I have just bought one of his other books Ready Aim Fire and will be reviewing that too in the near future.

There are also some real nuggets on how to plan a start-up and why so many entrepreneurs get is horribly wrong.
